Neurotoxin Uses Beyond the Upper Face

When people think of Botox or Dysport, they often associate these neurotoxins with smoothing forehead lines and crow’s feet. However, neurotoxins have a variety of uses beyond the upper face, offering both aesthetic and functional benefits. At Denver Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics, we utilize these treatments to enhance facial harmony and provide relief for common muscular concerns. Here’s how neurotoxins can be used beyond the upper face:

Corners of the Mouth

As we age, the corners of the mouth can start to turn downward, creating a perpetually sad or tired appearance. By injecting neurotoxin into the depressor anguli oris (DAO) muscle, we can prevent this downward pull, resulting in a more neutral or slightly lifted smile. This treatment can also improve the appearance of marionette lines. Typically, 2-4 units per side are used for optimal results.

Lips

A subtle but effective way to enhance the lips is by injecting 2-4 units of neurotoxin into the orbicularis oris muscle. This technique, often referred to as a “lip flip,” relaxes the muscle, causing the upper lip to roll slightly outward. The result is the appearance of a fuller, more defined lip without adding volume.

Jawline

For some individuals, the masseter muscles—the muscles used for chewing—can become enlarged due to stress, teeth grinding, or genetics. This can create a squared or overly prominent jawline. Injecting 20-30 units per side of neurotoxin into the masseters helps slim the lower face, creating a softer and more contoured jawline. This treatment can also provide relief from jaw pain and tension caused by TMJ disorders.

Neck

As we age, vertical platysmal bands in the neck can become more prominent, contributing to an aged or sagging appearance. Injecting neurotoxin into these bands can smooth the neck, giving it a more youthful look. This is a newly FDA-approved use for Botox. Depending on the prominence and strength of the bands, 20-30 units per side may be used.

Trapezius (Traps)

For patients with a muscular upper back and shoulders, treating the trapezius muscle with neurotoxin can help create a more elongated neck and refined silhouette. Additionally, this treatment can relieve muscle tension and chronic pain caused by posture, stress, repetitive movements, or injury. Depending on the individual’s needs, 50-100 units of neurotoxin may be used.
