Full and thick lashes have been sought after by women for many years and they make a significant impact on how we visualize the face. There are so many options to help improve the look of lashes, professional application of false lashes, use of daily products, and even vitamins.

Understanding Thinning Hair and Lashes

Let’s take a minute to discuss why lashes become short or start to thin in the first place. It is said that “the eyes are the window to the soul,” and your eyelashes are no exception.  A sudden change in amount or thickness of hair can be an indication that something more is going on with your health.  Hormonal imbalances such as thyroid disorders or natural changes that occur with aging have both been known to cause hair to thin. Vitamin deficiencies are also common as are autoimmune or inflammatory conditions.

Not all thinning hair means that you have an underlying condition to worry about. Often, it is also caused by poor beauty habits. Rubbing aggressively with makeup remover or forgetting to take off mascara all together can lead to a loss of fullness. One cosmetic tool that you should toss away immediately are hot eyelash curlers. These can easily singe hairs and cause unnecessary breakage. Continuous use of eyelash extensions has also been shown to cause long term eyelash thinning. Inflammation of the eyelid (also known as blepharitis) is the most common reason for lash loss. This appears as itchy eyelids that can appear red or sometimes puffy.

If there is any concern that you may need a further work-up from your doctor, please discuss this with our experienced providers. They will be able to help point you in the right direction. If further testing is not indicated, there are a few things you can do to encourage healthy eyelash growth. Lashes take approximately 90 days to grow from start to finish, but results can be seen as early as 4 weeks. Making sure to remove makeup is important. An oil cleanser or micellar water are ideal for dissolving makeup without excessive scrubbing.

Why choose Revitalash®?

One of our favorite products in the office is Revitalash® Eyelash Conditioner. It was developed by ophthalmologists to enhance the look of lashes by improving strength and flexibility while protecting against breakage. It contains a special blend of peptids, lipids, biotin, and green tea extracts. In a 6-week study, 98% of participants reported improved lash appearance, stronger and healthier lashes. It is recommended to use the product daily and apply it directly to the upper lash line. It is important to completely remove makeup as this can create a barrier between the lashes and the serum. These ingredients have been specially formatted to also treat the brow with Revitabrow®. Beautiful, healthy lashes are just around the corner. It is recommended to start using Revitalash® at least 4 weeks before any large event so that you might start seeing results.
